The series, Golden Age of Movement, draws inspiration from vintage era swing dances including the lindy hop, charleston, blues and balboa.
1) The ‘form’ shows the hand of the artists and the method of creation. The work should be expressive and tactile.
2) The content represents the world in a new innovative way while simultaneously reflecting knowledge of the trends and traditions of art history.
For example, these goals are incorporated into my current work formally by utilizing the natural texture of watercolor paper. Brushstrokes are used to indicate the movement and spontaneity inherent to the dances I am illustrating. The content of my work reflects on the long history of dance being integrated in the visual arts. My paintings depict contemporary movements and social dance forms. They are primarily influenced by old black and white films and traditional hand drawn animation which is a relatively modern means of artistic expression.
